The enforced restructuring of the traditional media industry in the UK has brought about a very positive impact on the exhibition industry. Just fifteen years ago it was obligatory for any professional to absorb much from their own specialist trade press. Trade magazine, operating in highly specialised niches, were the number one source of information withing many industries. IN addition the trade magazine also represented a Key platform for communication between players in any particular market. The growth and adoption of the internet has changed all that. Many trade magazines are still around, some are flourishing but the majority has re-invented themselves as web sites.

Whilst the global economy continues to move forward it seems that the worst of the economic grief associated with the recession is now behind - that seems to the be the opinion of the majority of business leaders well as political and economic commentators alike. At the same time the structure of the average marketing budget has changed dramatically over recent years as the impact of the Internet has re-shaped the world’s economy and changed the way most of us do business. So, would It be true to say that, against this backdrop, the continuing trend towards exhibiting as solid way to develop new clients and business, is not at all surprising?

In our last post we discussed the different philosophies some exhibition stand designers like to work to and how the graphic design of pop up stands and banner stands should be approached. We talked about the “one image-one headline” attention grabber approach. This approach is totally valid but probably most appropriate when there is an eager sales person or consultant on hand to fan the spark of interest that their attention grabber may have ignited. But maybe this approach is not so great when the stand may be un-manned or perhaps if your stand is intended for browsers rather than talkers!

For example, how should the graphic design of a pop up stand be approached in the context of it being used at an exhibition within a shell scheme stand? Well, the answer almost always comes back to the question “What is going to best fulfil our exhibiting objectives?” For example, some designers may take the view that, most important of all is a bold, attention grabbing headline and image, designed to catch the browsers eye and imagination literally in the blink of an eye
